Why? Because the “last mile” of data science—running a regression, clustering data, or generating a forecast—is being productized. Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) platforms can now ingest raw data, perform feature engineering, select models, and tune hyperparameters with performance that often matches or exceeds what a generalist can build manually in a reasonable timeframe.
The plateau hits hardest those who have not specialized. A professional who knows how to use Pandas and a random forest model is competing against a SaaS platform that does the same in one click. The profession is bifurcating. On one side, there is the Consumer of AI—business analysts using no-code tools. On the other side, there is the Creator of AI—researchers and ML engineers building novel architectures or deeply optimizing inference.
The middle ground, where a human manually bridges the gap between raw data and a standard model, is collapsing. To avoid stagnation, data scientists must pivot toward deep statistical understanding, causal inference (which AI struggles with), or domain expertise that guides the AutoML tools. The “generalist” label is becoming a liability.
